Powers of Attorney

In 1985, the Enduring Powers of Attorney Act made it possible to appoint a person of your own choosing to administer your affairs in the event of mental incapacity. The Mental Capacity Act which came into effect in 2007 replaced Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPA) with a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) enable you to set out your wishes in a legal document and to appoint trusted people of your choice as your 'attorneys'. At the appropriate time your attorneys can help you and make decisions for you in accordance with your personality and your wishes. They can oversee your finances if you become unable to manage them yourself because of your ill health.
